Common Causes of Knee Pain
Osteoarthritis
The most common cause in adults over 50. Cartilage wears down over time causing pain, stiffness, and swelling especially in the morning.
Runner's Knee
Pain around the kneecap from overuse, improper footwear, or muscle imbalance. Common in runners and cyclists.
Ligament Injuries
ACL and MCL tears cause sudden severe pain, swelling, and instability. Usually from sports injuries or sudden twisting movements.
Meniscus Tears
Torn cartilage in the knee causes pain, locking, and swelling. Can occur from sudden twisting or gradually from wear and tear.
Tendinitis
Inflammation of the patellar tendon causes pain just below the kneecap. Common in athletes who jump frequently.
Treatment Options
Conservative Treatment
RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Combined with anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy this resolves most knee pain.
Physical Therapy
Strengthening the quadriceps and hamstrings reduces stress on the knee joint and often eliminates pain without surgery.
When Surgery Is Needed
Severe ligament tears, advanced arthritis, or persistent pain despite 6 months of conservative treatment may require surgery.
