Ozempic and GLP-1 Drugs: What Diabetics Need to Know in 2025

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) are a class of injectable medications that mimic a natural hormone in your gut. They lower blood sugar, reduce appetite, and slow digestion.

Who Are They For?

These medications are primarily approved for Type 2 diabetes management. Some are also approved for weight loss in people with obesity. They are not suitable for Type 1 diabetics.

How Effective Are They?

Clinical trials show semaglutide can reduce HbA1c by up to 2% and body weight by 10 to 15%. Tirzepatide shows even stronger results in some studies, with weight loss exceeding 20% in certain patients.

Common Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are the most common side effects, especially when starting. They typically improve after 4 to 8 weeks. Rare but serious risks include pancreatitis and thyroid tumors in animal studies.

Are They Available in Your Country?

Availability varies by region. Shortages have been reported globally due to high demand. Speak with your doctor about local availability and whether a biosimilar option exists.

Should You Ask Your Doctor?

If your blood sugar is not well controlled with metformin or other oral medications, GLP-1 drugs may be worth discussing. They are especially beneficial if you also need to lose weight.
